The chemical composition and influence of bauxite

Sep 21, 2022

We often mention 80 bauxite, or 70 bauxite. What does the 8070 mentioned here refer to?

The quality of bauxite we are talking about is basically judged according to the level of alumina content in bauxite. What other substances are contained in bauxite? Let's analyze it today.

The mineral composition of bauxite is mainly diaspore (diaspore), kaolin, illite, montmorillonite, and the impurity minerals are ilmenite, limonite, pyrite, tourmaline, calcite, quartz, etc. These. The chemical composition of bauxite, as long as it is alumina, silica and water, and contains a small amount of titanium oxide, iron oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, potassium oxide and organic impurities. So what is the effect of these chemical components on bauxite?

The first is alumina, which is the main beneficial component of bauxite. The higher the alumina content, the higher the refractoriness.

Silica exists in clay basically in the form of aluminosilicate, with a small amount of free silica. Free silica can weaken the plasticity and cohesion of clay.

Iron minerals (iron oxides) are the most common harmful impurities in refractory clays, which reduce the refractoriness and slag resistance of the finished product, and can cause scarring of the refractory product.

When the content of calcium magnesium carbonate and sulfate minerals is high, it will reduce the refractoriness of clay, increase the firing shrinkage rate of the product, reduce the softening temperature under load and cause cracks in the product.

Titanium dioxide in refractory clay will have different effects with the level of content. An appropriate amount of titanium oxide can act as a flux during sintering and can promote sintering, but excessive titanium dioxide will reduce the refractoriness and cause network cracks in the product.

When the content of potassium oxide and sodium oxide in the clay is high, the load softening temperature of the product will be lowered.

Organic matter is one of the common impurities in clay, and if the content is too high, it will reduce the slag resistance of the product and increase the loss on ignition.

The above is my analysis of the chemical composition of bauxite and its influence. If you have insight on this, you can contact me to discuss it together!

At the end of the article, I wish you all: everything goes well, and always goes well!
